“The Lord is with you, mighty man of valor.” — Judges 6:12

When God called Gideon a “mighty man of valor,” he was hiding in fear. Nothing in his situation reflected strength. Yet God spoke to who Gideon would become, not just where he was.

This is God’s pattern. He calls people into purposes beyond their current capacity, then provides what is needed to fulfill it.

In family businesses, leaders often drift into a different pattern. We see the gaps. We focus on what’s missing. Over time, we define the next generation by their limitations instead of their calling.

But God leads differently. He sees not only where someone is, but what He is forming.

So the question becomes:

When you look at the next generation…

  • Do you see obstacles or opportunity?
  • Do you focus on risk or potential?
  • Do your words reflect belief or concern?

If we only speak to weakness, we reinforce it. But when we call out evidence of God’s design, we participate in His work.

Leadership is not just evaluation. It’s formation.

To build a culture that calls up future stewards:

  • Start with your lens — Identify and speak strengths before addressing weaknesses
  • Make development intentional — Build it into how you operate, not as an occasional effort
  • Move them along the pathway — Employee → Ownership → Stewardship
  • Engage both heart and capability — Connect them to purpose and give real responsibility
  • Measure what matters — Not just performance, but growth and readiness

This is how you move from simply employing the next generation to preparing them to steward what God owns.

Reflection Questions

  • Do I primarily see the weaknesses or the evidence of God’s design in the next generation?
  • How do my words and actions influence how they grow and lead?
  • Where might God be calling me to give someone an opportunity before they feel ready?
  • What intentional steps am I taking to develop future stewards—not just employees?
  • Are these development practices present and consistent in our family business today?
